Renji Abarai (阿散井 恋次) is Captain Byakuya Kuchiki's second in command and the spouse of Rukia Kuchiki. Initially, he served as the 11th Division's 6th Seat under Kenpachi Zaraki. He makes it his mission in life to destroy Ichigo Kurosaki, the show's protagonist. But switches sides midway through the Soul Society arc in order to rescue Rukia Kuchiki.
